A message from Valerie Creighton, President and CEO, CMF
Earlier this year, I announced that the Canada Media Fund was gearing up for virtual cross-country consultations in the weeks ahead. I’m pleased to launch the consultation today.
I want to encourage everyone involved in the creation, production, and distribution of screen content to participate in these consultations, even if you haven’t worked with CMF in the past. Whether you produce French-language documentaries and kids shows in Manitoba, design VR experiences in Calgary, or run a video game studio in Québec City or St. John’s, please sign up here and now for one of our virtual meetings in April or take a few minutes to answer our online questionnaire.
The pandemic has changed everything except the resilience and innovation of our screen content industry. It did reveal how fragile our current system is. But disruption isn’t anything new in our business. How we create our content and experiences, and how we bring them to audiences in Canada and around the world were all put to the test during the digital revolution long before the pandemic came along.
The persistent systemic racism and discrimination in our industry have now been exposed. And we know that our industry – and our country – will never flourish as they should without the voices and the stories of all Canadians.
An unprecedented opportunity lies before us with the permanent structural change that’s on the table in the government’s proposed amendments to key legislation and regulations.
Now is the time to explore together the best ways to support our screen content industry as it recovers, grows, and competes successfully in the global marketplace and the tools the CMF could provide to help make it all happen.
As part of the consultations, the CMF team and I will be holding discussions with many of the organizations that support you in getting your content funded, produced, and brought to market – including other funding agencies in the country, industry associations and groups that advocate on your behalf, unions and guilds that represent our talent, and our broadcasters and distributors.
I look forward to seeing you, at least virtually, in April and to hearing what you have to say about the future of our industry and the road ahead.
