Canada and Luxembourg announce $1.8M codevelopment and coproduction incentive
Toronto/Luxembourg, February 22, 2018 - The Canada Media Fund (CMF) and Film Fund Luxembourg (FFL), the body responsible for film funding and media business development in Luxembourg, announced today the signing of a two-year agreement to establish a dedicated incentive for the codevelopment and coproduction of audiovisual projects between Canadian producers and Luxembourger producers. The announcement was made to coincide with the CMF’s participation at the Luxembourg City Film Festival.
“For over 20 years, we’ve seen content produced between Canadian and Luxembourger creators hit international markets with great commercial success and critical acclaim. A recent example of this is The Breadwinner, an Oscar-nominated, mesmerizing and deeply touching, animated feature film that tells the story of a girl in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan,” said Valerie Creighton, President and CEO, CMF. “Through this incentive, we hope to further develop strong partnerships between producers in both countries, enabling them to continue creating superior content that resonates with audiences around the world.”
“By supporting for over 20 years audiovisual production with Canada, we have seen quality films emerge between Canadian and Luxembourger partners involved in international coproductions,” said Guy Daleiden, Managing Director of Film Fund Luxembourg. “We wish to further strengthen our good relations in the audiovisual field. This new agreement will help to diversify these partnerships, especially in terms of new content such as virtual or augmented reality. We will create new opportunities to share our resources and talents so that international collaboration benefits the creative community in each country.”
To qualify, projects must involve producers eligible under criteria from each organisation. Television projects at the development stage will be drama series, or animated projects. The incentive will also support coproduction of eligible digital media projects, such as virtual and augmented reality, transmedia projects and enabling technologies. Further details of the program, including guidelines and key dates, will be announced in the weeks to come.
The combined total annual budget for the Incentive will be CAD$900,000 (or approx. € 600,000) with each party contributing half, representing an investment of CAD$1,800,000 (or approx. €1,200,000) over two years.
The total maximum combined contribution for each television or digital media project at the development stage will be CAD$100,000, or approximately €65,000; and CAD$500,000, or approximately €320,000 for each digital media project at the production stage. Contribution from each country in each project will be determined on a case by case basis.
The evaluation and selection of the projects will be done through a selective process. The selection committee will comprise representatives of the CMF and FFL, as well as one independent expert from a third country selected by both parties.

Producers interested in finding an international partner as part of this incentive are invited to post a profile of their company on the CMF’s website by clicking here. Profiles will be accessible to all, including potential partners from other countries.
