Canada and Mexico announce coproduction incentive during MICA 2018

Mexico City, June 5, 2018 - The Canada Media Fund (CMF) and the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE) announced today a new agreement to establish a Production Incentive for fiction, documentary or animation series produced in collaboration between Mexican and Canadian producers. The announcement was made today during the opening ceremony of the Mercado Industria Cine y Audiovisual (MICA), taking place in Mexico City from June 5 to the 9.

The incentive’s objective is to continue strengthening the bonds between Mexico and Canada and to stimulate the creation of quality audiovisual content relevant to audiences in both countries and around the world.

Valerie Creighton, President and CEO, CMF, was present during the opening ceremony and expressed Canada’s interest in fostering constructive ties with the Mexican screen-based sector.

Likewise, the Mexican Film Institute pointed out the importance to continue its collaboration with the Canada Media Fund, an important ally for Mexican professionals venturing into new narratives and audiovisual projects.

The total amount of available funds will be CAD$1M, with a contribution of CAD $500,000 from CMF and IMCINE respectively, to be distributed among the selected projects. The results will be announced by March 2019.

To access the Production Incentive, the projects must involve Mexican and Canadian producers, and meet the requirements from both institutions. The details of the program, key dates and specified requirements will be announced in the coming weeks.

Canada is the country of honour at MICA 2018, with the presence of an important delegation of representatives from the Canadian government through the Department of Canadian Heritage and Global Affairs Canada, as well as producers and representatives from funding agencies in the Canadian screen-based industries. Members of the delegation will attend various industry events and high-level talks with existing and potential partners in Mexico.
