The Second Screen and Television – Overview and Growth Perspectives

Montreal, October 24, 2012 – In response to legitimate questions raised by television production and broadcasting professionals regarding the use of a second-screen while viewing television broadcasts, Evolumedia Group has completed the first of three reports to be co-published with the Canada Media Fund (CMF) and funded by the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC).

This status report covers the models, terms of use and growth prospects for the second screen phenomenon which is expanding rapidly due to a combination of massive influx of smartphones, tablets and other mobile personal communications devices into homes as well as the huge popularity of social media.

Published in English and French, the 20-page report, entitled The Second Screen and Television – Overview and Growth Perspectives, portrays the phenomenon with particular attention to user multi-tasking, interactive TV, second screen applications and audience breakdowns by type of activity.

“Over the past decade producers have wondered what would be the most effective approaches to marrying television and the Web. The CMF sees the popularity of second screen use as an exciting opportunity for a convergence between TV content and digital platforms,” said Catalina Briceño, CMF director of Industry and Market Trends. This first chapter will be completed by two more “white papers” which together will form a complete body of information on the current situation and the opportunities that second screen usage provides.

The report concludes that the context for market growth is favourable to all stakeholders in the value chain – creators, producers, application designers, social media, broadcasters and advertisers alike.

According to Evolumedia Group president Gilbert Ouellette, “This work shows how ready and willing our firm is to make accurate information available to media professionals about this rapidly evolving sector. In that sense, this project ideally complements other Evolumedia products, such as The ABCs of Connected TV, which was also financed by the CMF, and The Second Screen for TV – the new interactivity conference which will take place on November 28 in Montréal.”

The report is available online in a PDF format and is distributed in Canada by the Canada Media Fund at www.cmf-fmc.ca and internationally by Evolumedia Group at smartmediaplatforms.com.
