CMF, Manitoba Film & Music team up to boost early-stage funding for documentaries

Toronto and Winnipeg, May 7, 2024 – The Canada Media Fund (CMF) and Manitoba Film & Music (MFM) today announced a new joint program to fund documentaries in predevelopment.

Through the Predevelopment Program for Documentary Productions, Manitoba-based producers will be able to secure up to $25,000 in funding toward a new documentary project’s eligible costs. Applicants may submit a maximum of two projects.

“The CMF is delighted to partner with MFM to bolster opportunities for Manitoba’s storytellers,” says Valerie Creighton, President and CEO of the Canada Media Fund. “This program will provide a crucial stepping stone for factual producers in the province and is part of our ongoing commitment to support the documentary genre and ensure that the best stories from every corner of our country are told.”

“We are thrilled to work with the CMF to provide this new stream of development funding,” says Lynne Skromeda, CEO and Film Commissioner at Manitoba Film & Music. “This is an important opportunity for documentary storytellers, and we’re excited to see our factual producers have this dedicated support available.”

Among other criteria, projects eligible for funding must meet the CMF’s Documentary definition and be in the early concept stage of development without the financial participation of a broadcaster or distributor. They can be features, one-offs, mini-series, or series.
